The Difference Between Learning and Teaching

Teaching should not be referred to as learning. Learning is a personal process that cannot be measured. Learning is a scientific process that can either be studied using cognitivist or physcological theories. It is this process that is of interest to the teacher. The teacher’s role is to facilitate learning and to develop a student’s capacity for learning.

Constructivism

A common misconception is that the theory of constructivism focuses solely on the teaching of facts and figures. The theory emphasizes the importance and value of students’ prior knowledge when they apply it to new experiences. Constructivists stress the importance of field trips as a core learning activity. Students learn to make hypotheses, test their theories, then draw conclusions based upon their experiences.

Student-centered

In higher education, student-centered learning and teaching has been a growing trend over the past decades. What are the benefits of student-centered learning? This approach emphasizes the importance of student input and engagement, and is based on the belief that students learn best when they are involved in the course design. These are just a few of the reasons student-centered learning and teaching are good for education. Read on to discover more. Once you are convinced of the concept, you might want more in-depth and meaningful ways.

Relevance

Although academic literature often speaks of the importance relevance, it doesn’t always explain what it means. In fact, I found only one book on the subject in my own personal library. Maybe it’s because he didn’t know what education meant, even though he was writing about it. Relevance is the key to intrinsic motivation in student learning. Relevant content helps learners connect the material to their lives, experiences, and allows them to absorb it and create their own understanding.

Efficacy

The increase in student achievement is often used to measure the effectiveness of teaching and learning interventions. This increase is typically reported as an increase in percentage score. Sometimes, however the increase is subtler and measured in changes in student attitudes. The effectiveness of a teacher can be affected by many factors. This study also highlighted the importance of art-based teaching strategies.
